Spanish Language and Cultures, BA

The B.A. program in Spanish Language and Cultures emphasizes language studies and cultures of Spanish-speaking communities. This program provides students with the skills to communicate competently and confidently in both written and oral form. Instruction at all levels stresses oral proficiency and cultural competence with the use of authentic media to prepare students for cultural, educational, literary, and professional needs throughout the United States, and abroad.

 

Program Learning Outcomes:

  1. Speak, read, and write the Spanish language with an awareness of idiomatic everyday usage.
  2. Practice bicultural competence.
  3. Identify examples of cultural accomplishments and historic events in Spanish-speaking countries and communities which relate to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  4. Explain how linguistic and cultural traditions within Spanish-speaking communities reflect moral and social perceptions.
  5. Translate and interpret accurately between English and Spanish.
  6. Assess the ways in which language and cultures offer views on society in regard to lifestyles, customs, and community.

Required Core Language Curriculum (15 sem. hrs.)


All must be completed with a grade of C or higher. Courses in the major cannot be taken Pass/Fail.  Learners who receive a waiver for SPAN 201 must take an additional 3 hours of electives from within the Spanish Language and Cultures program in order to complete the degree. Learners who receive a waiver for SPAN 201 and SPAN 202 must take an additional 6 hours of electives from within the Spanish Language and Cultures program.
