This major is an interdisciplinary, liberal arts and sciences course of study that focuses on the interactions between humans and the natural environment. Students examine the structure and function of natural systems and the ways that human social, political and economic activity affect those systems. Students also develop ideas and skills needed to constructively engage in the solution of environmental issues. A degree in Sustainability can lead to careers in a wide variety of public and private organizations and government agencies. It also prepares students for graduate study in environmental science, law, journalism, and public policy.

- Explain basic scientific vocabulary and concepts related to biology, chemistry, and environmental science as they relate to sustainability.
- Describe the complex interaction between the scientific, social, and economic issues related to sustainability.
- Explain the qualitative and quantitative methods used in sustainability research.
- Interpret and evaluate scientific results using statistical analyses and critical thinking.
- Demonstrate competence in finding, using, and evaluating scientific writing and primary literature.
- Recognize key ethical issues in environmental science and sustainability.
